There is growing recognition of the essential role of nuclear energy in achieving net-zero emissions. In 2023, the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy—endorsed by 25 countries from four continents—established the goal to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Meanwhile, the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement recognized nuclear energy—for the first time in a major COP decision—among the key solutions to help keep the 1.5-degree goal within reach.
This event will feature announcements from new and existing endorsers on their progress and plans. It will be followed by a panel featuring Ghana, Google, the IAEA, POSCO Steel, and the United States to discuss the diverse use-cases of small modular reactors (SMRs) and how to accelerate their deployment in support of the global tripling goal.
This event is co-organized by the COP29 Presidency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United States of America, and the World Nuclear Association.
