Agenda
- Opening remarks by the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero.
- Opening remarks by the US Department of Energy.
- Panel and Q&A: How advanced nuclear technologies can contribute to the global climate mitigation agenda by supporting industrial decarbonisation and relieving pressure on the domestic electricity grid.
- Closing remarks.
Event Objectives
At COP28, the UK alongside 25 other countries endorsed the ‘Tripling Nuclear by 2050 Declaration’, the pledge recognised that the world needs more nuclear energy to meet our global net zero target. The UK Government recognises the important role that advanced nuclear technologies will play in this transition.
Nuclear energy's ability to generate baseload low-carbon electricity already contributes to the global climate mitigation agenda but what of its potential beyond the domestic power grid?
Expert panelists will discuss advanced nuclear technologies’ unique capabilities, opportunities and challenges in broader clean energy applications. These include providing carbon-free electricity for the data centers that will power our future and support hard-to-abate energy industries. The event will focus on three primary objectives:
- Nuclear energy’s role in decarbonisation. Exploring the role of advanced nuclear energy development and deployment for the decarbonisation of key industrial sectors.
- Selection of advanced nuclear technology. Discussion on the various technologies/models selected by industry and governments and their suitability for clean energy application.
- Challenges and opportunities. Examining possible public-private sector collaboration including financing and investment, waste management, safety methods and regulation.
