There is growing recognition of the essential role of nuclear energy in achieving net-zero emissions. In 2023, the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy—endorsed by 25 countries from four continents—established the goal to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Meanwhile, the Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement recognized nuclear energy—for the first time in a major COP decision—among the key solutions to help keep the 1.5-degree goal within reach. This year, the IAEA and Belgium co-chaired the first Nuclear Energy Summit, in which countries highlighted the role of nuclear energy in reducing the use of fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and boosting economic development. Most recently, at New York Climate Week, 14 banks from five countries signaled their support for nuclear and for the goals of the Declaration.
High-level government, IAEA, and private-sector representatives discuss the unique attributes of SMRs and their role in decarbonization and in tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050, as well as actions to deploy SMRs.
This event is co-organized by the COP29 Presidency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United States of America, and the World Nuclear Association.
