Urenco becoming a strategic partner highlights industry support for this initiative, which was launched by the World Nuclear Association (WNA) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), with the support of the Atoms4NetZero initiative launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the World Nuclear Symposium in 2023.
In the lead up to COP30, which will be hosted by Brazil later this year, Net Zero Nuclear aims to bring together political leaders and industry leaders to engage in a data-driven, actionable, solutions-focused dialogue to enable the rapid expansion of the global nuclear fleet and the acceleration of research and development into emerging nuclear technologies.
The initiative will work to ensure nuclear energy’s potential is fully realized in facilitating the decarbonization of global energy systems, by promoting the value of nuclear energy and removing barriers to its growth.
Boris Schucht, Urenco CEO, said: “Current energy challenges are dominated by the climate crisis and the need to decarbonise our economies, energy security as a result of geopolitical issues, and dramatically increased demand including from AI and data centres. There is therefore a growing global consensus on the urgent need to significantly and rapidly increase civil nuclear capacity.
The Net Zero Nuclear initiative is helping to effectively coordinate industry efforts. We fully support its mission to at least triple nuclear capacity by 2050 and we are pleased to play a leading role through fuelling the reactors of today and tomorrow.”
Dr Sama Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association said: “Collaboration is absolutely key to achieving our goal of ensuring a greater use of nuclear in the clean energy mix. That is why we are pleased to welcome back Urenco as a strategic partner in the Net Zero Nuclear initiative. Their leadership in uranium and our shared mission will be instrumental in helping us deliver our ambition of tripling global nuclear power generation by 2050. With Urenco on board, we will continue our mission to bring about the changes necessary for a sustainable future. As we approach #COP30, we will continue to collaborate with government, industry leaders and civil society to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050”
