On the sidelines of Africa Energy Week, Lesedi Nuclear Services has become the latest organization to commit to a net-zero future by signing the Net Zero Nuclear Pledge, a significant step toward advancing clean and sustainable energy through nuclear power. The pledge, signed at the Atlantic Beach Estate with the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station as backdrop, symbolizes a commitment to reduce global carbon emissions and a move toward a 24/7 reliable clean energy future.

The Net-Zero Nuclear initiative, launched at COP28, continues to gain momentum throughout the industry, spearheaded by World Nuclear Association.

In welcoming Lesedi Nuclear Services to the coalition of global companies that have signed the pledge, Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, emphasized the commitment they are making to achieving net zero through nuclear energy.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lesedi Nuclear Services as part of this global initiative. Nuclear energy is essential to the future of clean energy, providing the world with reliable, carbon-free energy around the clock. Lesedi Nuclear Services commitment reflects a forward-thinking approach that brings us closer to a sustainable future," Sama remarked.

King Lee, Head of Policy & Industry Engagement at World Nuclear Association who spoke extensively on the role of nuclear energy in a just energy transition during events at Africa Energy Week, praised Lesedi Nuclear Services’ decision to join the pledge.

“Lesedi Nuclear Services work in extending the life of Koeberg underscores the important role nuclear power plays not only in South Africa but also globally. Nuclear energy provides the stability that renewable sources need to scale and succeed. I am delighted to welcome Lesedi Nuclear Services to this initiative, as it brings us one step closer to a more just and sustainable energy transition for all,"

Dr Derik Wolvaardt, Senior Executive Nuclear commented

“we are very proud to have joined this global initiative with World Nuclear Association for the use of nuclear power to achieve the world’s “Net Zero” climate change objective by 2050. Dispatchable nuclear power along with renewables provide the only sustainable combination of electricity generating technologies to achieve this crucial objective. Lesedi Nuclear Services’ efforts to support Eskom with hardware upgrades and Safety Assessments for Long Term Operation has led to the extension of the Koeberg operating licence for another 20 years. By supporting this plant life extension and the deployment of a future 2500 MW of new nuclear (Large units, SMRs) envisaged in the South African Integrated Resource Plan, Lesedi is already making strides in support of the pledge.”

The pledge signing near Koeberg serves as a milestone for South Africa and the nuclear industry, showcasing a commitment to a cleaner and more resilient energy future. Lesedi Nuclear Services joins an expanding network of companies and organizations dedicated to meeting global net zero targets and addressing climate change through innovative and sustainable energy solutions.

The Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge reflects the collective dedication of organizations worldwide to harness the power of nuclear energy as a critical component of the clean energy transition. With nuclear power recognized as a reliable and scalable solution for meeting global energy needs while addressing climate challenges, expanding its role is essential to achieving our net zero goals.
