3 December 2023: Net Zero Nuclear, the initiative calling for collaboration among government, industry leaders and civil society to triple global nuclear capacity to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, is pleased to have the support of Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy and the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan as corporate partners as COP 28 gets underway. Both partners have joined at the Bronze level, underscoring the ever-growing momentum for the effort, which was launched by World Nuclear Association (WNA) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), with the support of the Atoms4NetZero initiative launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the World Nuclear Symposium in London earlier this year.
As COP28 in Dubai moves forward, Net Zero Nuclear has brought together political leaders and industry to engage in data-driven, actionable, solutions-focused dialogue to enable the rapid expansion of the global nuclear fleet and the acceleration of research and development into emerging nuclear technologies. The initiative will work to ensure nuclear energy’s potential is fully realized in facilitating the decarbonization of global energy systems, by promoting the value of nuclear energy and removing barriers to its growth.
His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, which leads the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program and its flagship Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, said: “Expanding nuclear energy will be essential in meeting global energy security challenges and helping us meet net zero goals, and we need strong partners from every continent to help advance this work. We welcome Hitachi-GE and the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan to this effort. Their expertise as industry leaders will be invaluable in moving Net Zero Nuclear’s work forward.”
Shinichiro Sato, President of Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, said: “Nuclear energy will lead the way in mitigating global warming and supports the transition to a sustainable future. Through cooperation with overseas companies, we are committed to developing innovative solutions and advanced nuclear technologies to contribute to national energy security and, in turn, to the global net-zero targets. The Net Zero Nuclear initiative at COP28 represents a turning point in awareness and action on the critical role of nuclear energy in achieving net zero and provides an ideal opportunity for cross-sector engagement and action. We are honored to cooperate in this effort, which supports the recognition of nuclear energy as a green energy source and advocates tripling nuclear capacity by 2050.”
Dr Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of World Nuclear Association said: “We welcome our new corporate partnerships with FEPC and Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy. Achieving the Net Zero Nuclear goal of at least tripling of nuclear capacity by 2050 will require us all to work together, and therefore I welcome the addition of our new partners to the growing number of companies that have leant us their support.”
