3 December 2023: Net Zero Nuclear, the initiative calling for collaboration among government, industry leaders and civil society to triple global nuclear capacity to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, is pleased to have the support of IHI Corporation and JGC Corporation as corporate partners as COP 28 gets underway. Both partners have joined at the Bronze level, underscoring the ever-growing momentum for the effort, which was launched by World Nuclear Association (WNA) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), with the support of the Atoms4NetZero initiative launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the World Nuclear Symposium in London earlier this year.

As COP28 in Dubai moves forward, Net Zero Nuclear has brought together political leaders and industry to engage in data-driven, actionable, solutions-focused dialogue to enable the rapid expansion of the global nuclear fleet and the acceleration of research and development into emerging nuclear technologies. The initiative will work to ensure nuclear energy’s potential is fully realized in facilitating the decarbonization of global energy systems, by promoting the value of nuclear energy and removing barriers to its growth.

His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, which leads the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program and its flagship Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, said: “Expanding nuclear energy will be essential in meeting global energy security challenges and helping us meet net zero goals, and we need strong partners from every continent to help advance this work. We welcome IHI Corporation and JGC Corporation to this effort. Their expertise as industry leaders will be invaluable in moving Net Zero Nuclear’s work forward.”

Koji Takeda, IHI Corporation’s President of Resource, Energy & Environment Business Area, said: “We are deeply honored to join the Net Zero Nuclear initiative at COP28, alongside our global partners with mutual aspirations to decarbonize society in our fight against climate change. To fulfill our mission to promote the energy transition to a carbon-neutral economy, IHI is committed to supporting rapid deployment of nuclear energy by leveraging our extensive engineering and manufacturing experience in the industry.”

Dr Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of World Nuclear Association said: “We welcome our new corporate partnership with IHI Corporation and JGC Corporation. Achieving the Net Zero Nuclear goal of at least tripling of nuclear capacity by 2050 will require us all to work together, and therefore I welcome IHI and JGC to the growing number of companies that have leant us their support.”
